Da Nang is the coastal city of Viet Nam which is well- known for Sea Food. And Goi Ca Nam O or Nam O Raw fish salad is one of the most popular brand name also specialties in Da Nang.

Located at the bottom of Hai Van Pass where Cu De river meets the sea is an area called Nam O. The name originates from its position at the south of the old administrative division “chau O”. Thanks to its terrain with the mountain and the sea, Nam O has spectacular natural landscape with beaches, reefs, rock banks…

Thank to geography, which is next to beach and Hai Van Pass, Nam O has vary fresh and unique to make a flavour dish like that. Vegetables served with raw fish that are so diverse and particularly rare. These are the kind of bud forest frog, heart spreads, fresh barbs, leaf brooch, the colors are true … “Purple withered”, contains tannin, flavor out for a fish salad, vegetables this also helps digestion … “. This species grows only on the Hai Van Pass, so sellers have to bring the forest to collect.

People can select Sardine, anchovy …for the dish. But herring is the most appropriate, because of its sweet and firm. Moreover, this type of fish live near the coast, so thay can catch up everyday and make sure its fresh.

Unlike sashimi of Japan, this fish dish of Da Nang is half-cooked; combined with the dipping sauce, spices and fresh greens, you can barely taste the rawness. Instead it leaves a very mild and pleasant mouth feel. To eat this dish you just need to apply the basic rolling technique.

Preparation:

  • Wash herring. Cut tail, head, belly and fillet them.
  • Cut into bite size
  • Marinate with fish sauce, vinegar, and much ginger, chilly, garlic..
  • After 10mins, pressed to dry it.
  • Coat with roasted corn and peanut powder and add some spices as personal taste.
  • Add some spices, chilli and garlic into pressed water form fish then fried them with crushed peanut in 3 mins and get ready.
  • Put vegetable on the thin rice cake , add some pieces of raw fish salad and roll it. Then deep into sauce and enjoy it.
