Fishery is one of the most vital professions of the local people in Central Vietnam. Therefore, fish is always play a very important role in their daily meal. One of their popular dishes which contains fish is Nam O raw fish salad – Goi ca Nam O. Not many people dare to try this dish because it is made from raw fish. However, once you tried it, you get addicted to it. Nam O raw fish salad can be made from sardines, anchovies, etc. However, the most tasty and appropriate fish for this dish is small herrings. Small herrings which is larger than fingers are removed head, fish-tail, belly, bone, then split into two pieces and sliced. After that, they are drained and marinated in ginger, galangal, minced garlic and roasted corn powder.

The fish juice is boiled then mixed with Nam O fish sauce, chili, tapioca, sodium glutamate to create unique sauce for the salad. Vegetables served with Nam O raw fish salad are very diverse and special. They are browses of ambarella, orchid’s heart, and other edible vegetables picked from local forested areas in Hai Van pass. However, nowadays, other vegetables such as cucumber, mango, banana … are used to meet the growing needs of customers.

There are two ways to eat raw fish: fish with vegetables rolling with rice paper or just fish mixed with vegetables and sauce. Put vegetables on a sheet of rice paper, pick up a few pieces of fish that have been spotted with golden galangal, roll it, put into the sauce bowl and “bite”. Sweetness fishes, moreish sauce, aromatic and spicy galangal and chilli, mingled with the fragrance of forest leaves bring you indescribable feelings when you feel the tastes deep in each cell of your tongue.

The real Nam O raw fish salad is sold in Nam O village, not anywhere else. Otherwise, you can try it in Nguyen Tat Thanh St. or Nam O Bridge with 40,000 Vnd per helping.
